PEMBA VILLAS, PEMBA, MOZAMBIQUE

A Mediterranean Village

The proposed Concept for this 2-acre beach plot in Pemba has been conceived following the Mediterranean quality of indoor and outdoor principles while reflecting Mozambiquan local weather and traditions.

The individual and attached villas are designed to shade each other while creating unique and intimate outdoor spaces interwoven with paved courtyards....

The sudden turns and twists as one walks along, expose and reveal unexpected views, street features such as a small water fountain, planters with fruit trees, sculptures, rugged short garden screen wall with niches, landscaped pergolas, street bench at a corner, cobble stone paving of differing patterns, low, medium and high level plants that all bring to life the Mediterranean charm.

We have conceived the villas in two rows: the beach villas are closer to the sea, and the courtyard villas are situated closer to the road.

The two rows thus define a courtyard in between them that runs parallel to the beach offering localized short views for those in the back-row villas while creating privacy.

The front row beach villas have been designed to maximize the sea views and by following the natural ground levels they sit at a lower height minimizing the visual impact for the back villas. They are also detached and arranged to create gaps or ‘green fingers’ in between them. These gaps will allow the breeze from the sea to reach the internal courtyard and back villas. The gaps also provide framed views to the back-row courtyard villas.

The second-row courtyard villas are raised off the ground by one floor in order to enhance their sea views over the front row villas and also through the ‘gaps’. The resulting multi-purpose spaces underneath these villas can be used for car parking and storage.
