PEMBA VILLAS, PEMBA, MOZAMBIQUE

Project Description

The brief asked for a master plan of a two-acre beach plot in Pemba, Mozambique, which required the development of 14 residential units that would eventually become a resort for an international Oil and Gas Corporate.

Each unit needed to be 200 sqm with sea views, and common amenities were to complement the development.

The master plan concept was a “Mediterranean village,” with attached and individual villas designed to create unique and intimate outdoor spaces interwoven with paved courtyards, and garden pergola to providing shade.

The villas were arranged in two rows to create a courtyard running parallel to the beach, with front row beach villas designed to maximize sea views and gaps between them allowing sea breezes to reach the internal courtyard and the garden villas on the back row.

The garden Villas were raised to enhance their sea views and create multipurpose spaces underneath for car parking and storage.

To maximize green open spaces, cars were restricted to the back of the plot underneath the garden villas.

Courtyards were paved with locally available stone, and covered walkways with landscaped pergolas provided additional shade, while mature indigenous trees found a home in large planter boxes surroounded by outdoor seating.
